The one where people get really drunk.
In addition to the main Touhou Project video game series, there are a number of canon Spin Offs including comics and other print materials. Touhou Suichouka ~ Lotus Eater-tachi no SuiseiTranslation is a manga written by ZUN and drawn by Mizutaki.
The manga centers around Miyoi Okunoda, the Zashiki-warashi serving girl of the pub Geidontei, as she deals with strange incidents at her pub as well as the strange customers she attracts (namely Suika, Mamizou, and Aya), all the while trying to avoid the suspicions of series leads Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame, who are constantly suspecting her of being behind said incidents. Arcs last two to three chapters and are mostly self-contained.
It can be read online (in Japanese) at ComicWalker and Nico Nico Seiga with a month's delay from the physical version in Comp Ace.
Examples:
- Art Shift: The animals and general scenery witnessed whenever someone drinks Miyoi's sake look as if they came out of a traditional painting.
- Call-Back: The "Change is the Way of Youkai" storyline, which revolves around Gensokyo's zashiki warashi going missing thanks to the interference of a Sage of Gensokyo (Okina) is a reference to Chapter 14 of Touhou Ibarakasen ~ Wild and Horned Hermit, which has a similar plot involving the interference of a Sage (Yukari).
- The Cameo: In Chapter 12, the Three Fairies of Light watch Miyoi from the bushes as she makes her way to the Hakurei Shrine.
- Casino Episode: Chapters 29 and 30 focus on Sannyo Komakusa's gambling parlor on Youkai Mountain, featuring Mamizou visiting to investigate rumors regarding Sannyo's tobacco pipe. The arc ends with Sannyo opening a branch at Geidontei to discourage humans from taking the dangerous hike up the mountain and she continues to appear at Geidontei afterward.
- Central Theme: Alcohol and drunkenness, as shown by character titles having some sort of alcohol reference and it centering around a pub where people drink alcohol.
- Continuity Nod:
- In Chapter 8:
- A drunken man mentions going to the Bamboo Forest of the Lost to find glowing bamboo shoots that taste especially good, which first appeared in Chapter 40 of Touhou Ibarakasen ~ Wild and Horned Hermit.
- When Aya appears inside Geidontei to scope it out for a news article, she wears the same newsboy disguise she originally wore in Touhou Suzunaan ~ Forbidden Scrollery.
- In Chapter 13 Suika makes a joke to Miyoi about the sake in her gourd being made from the slime of some sort of amphibian. This is true - the creature in question (a "sake bug") has previously appeared in chapters 17-18 of Strange and Bright Nature Deity, and chapter 16 of Wild and Horned Hermit.
- Chapter 36 has Yuugi discuss the events of Sunken Fossil World and how Yuuma has set up shop in Former Hell, and Suika goes to visit the remnants of the Hell of Blood Pools seen in the game.
- Chapter 48:
- Marisa uses the mini-Hakkero as a heating furnace like she did in Silent Sinner in Blue, but with some added refinements.
- The otter spirit tells Reimu and Marisa that it was originally sent to Gensokyo by Yachie in order to recruit more allies for the Kitetsu Family during Unfinished Dream of All Living Ghost, only for it to decide that it liked Gensokyo better than the Animal Realm and choose to stay afterwards.
- In Chapter 8:
- Curb-Stomp Battle: Even though it's really just a drunken stupor and they all fall unconscious afterwards, Reimu and co. always get their asses kicked by whatever hallucination of a beast appears when they drink Miyoi's sake.
- Deadly Game: In the "A Flower in the Hand is Worth..." storyline the plot centers around a deck of hanafuda cards possessed by vengeful spirits who were the victims of gambling games against oni where they would be killed at the end whether they won or lost.
- Full-Boar Action: Among the animals seen whenever people drink Miyoi's sake is a giant, highly aggressive boar.
- Hypocritical Humor: In Chapter 11 Reimu mentions the need for humans to fear youkai in order for Gensokyo's balance to be maintained when she hears rumors about youkai hanging around Geidontai. The narrative points out that she's guilty of the same thing since Reimu tolerates the presence of youkai at her shrine.
- I Need a Freaking Drink: At the end of Chapter 40, Miyoi gets so irritated with her struggles trying to refill the Ibuki Gourd being rendered All for Nothing by Suika's reveal that it doesn't need refilling due to the weather getting warmer, that she snatches the Gourd from Suika's hands and drinks it down right then and there.
- Lawyer-Friendly Cameo: The Animal Realm handhelds modified by the kappa to be waterproof are near-exact copies of Game Boys, complete with Link Cables.
- Minor Major Character: The old man who owns Geidontei. Being basically Miyoi's employer, you'd expect him to be more prominent. But nope, he's mostly relegated to the background and some dialogue here and there.
- Mystery of the Week: Story arcs taking place at Geidontei tend to take this format, with Miyoi becoming aware of an issue and the cause being figured out by either her or one of her recurring night-time customers.
- Mushroom Samba: Every time someone drinks the sake Miyoi brews they see all sorts of animals and the artwork shifts.
- Portal Door: It's revealed in Chapter 24 that Okina's doors can observe anywhere as long as the doors themselves are not being directly observed.
- Ripped from the Headlines: Chapter 24 has Gensokyo's Zashiki-warashi doing remote work on their houses from the Land of the Rear Door because it's easier than having to pack up every time they want to move, with the rear doors serving the same purpose as video conferencing services such as Zoom. While the COVID-19 Pandemic is not directly mentioned, it's clear that the focus on remote work is a direct reference to the pandemic confining most people to their homes, and many of them finding that they prefer home-based work over traditional office-based work.
- Slice of Life: Takes a fairly casual tone, with isolated story arcs focusing mainly on small occurrences and the main characters' reactions to them.
- Smart People Wear Glasses: Marisa spontaneously wears a pair of glasses for a panel in Chapter 39 when she describes herself as the foremost expert in magical items in Gensokyo.
- Those Two Guys: The two unnamed old men who frequent Geidontei. They usually appear only to talk about the recent Mystery of the Week with Miyoi, then disappear while the main cast deal with the issue. They're more representatives of the human villagers than actual characters.
